Afghanistan Conflict

Israel-Iran War
Israel opened the war on February 28, 2026 by striking roughly 500 targets across Iran and killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; four and a half months on, no separate Israel-Iran ceasefire currently holds, direct missile exchanges resumed as recently as June, and Israel is watching signs Iran is rebuilding the nuclear sites it struck.

Israel-Palestine War
Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,195 and taking 251 hostages, and Israel's subsequent Gaza offensive has killed at least 73,221 Palestinians according to Gaza's Health Ministry; a US-brokered ceasefire has held since October 10, 2025, but it remains fragile, with more than 1,000 Palestinians and several Israeli soldiers killed in the nine months since, and Hamas's disarmament still unresolved.

A bilateral US-Iran war opened February 28, 2026 with a joint US-Israeli strike campaign; two negotiated ceasefires have since collapsed, and as of July 12, 2026, US and Iranian forces remain in active exchanges across the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

Myanmar Civil War
Myanmar's military ousted its elected government on February 1, 2021, touching off a nationwide armed uprising that has since killed more than 100,000 people, displaced upward of 3.8 million, and split the country between a shrinking junta and a fractured array of resistance forces, from the National Unity Government's People's Defence Force to established ethnic armed organizations, that together hold most of its territory.

Since October 2023, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Iran-aligned militias in Iraq have fought parallel campaigns against Israel, the United States, and international shipping, a network of fronts that escalated sharply after the Israel-Iran war opened in February 2026 and remains only unevenly contained by a series of contested ceasefires.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022; after Kyiv held and Kharkiv and Kherson were retaken, a grinding front stabilized through Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Pokrovsk, and the war continues into its fifth year with no ceasefire currently in force and sourced casualty counts in the hundreds of thousands on both sides.

Sudanese Civil War
Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces went to war in Khartoum on April 15, 2023, and more than three years on the fighting has produced the world's largest displacement crisis, a US genocide determination against the RSF in Darfur, and no durable ceasefire between the two sides.

A jihadist insurgency that spilled over from Mali around 2015 has since destabilized Burkina Faso, driving two 2022 coups, a pivot from France to Russia, and a documented pattern of mass civilian killings that Human Rights Watch attributes to both JNIM militants and Burkinabe government forces.

Since 2009 Nigeria has fought three overlapping security crises at once: a still-active Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency in the northeast the UN says has killed 40,000+ people, farmer-herder violence across the Middle Belt that lawmakers put above 60,000 dead since 2001, and a newer northwest banditry-kidnapping wave, together displacing more than 3.5 million people as of early 2026.

Somali Civil War
Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgency that emerged from Somalia's collapsed Islamic Courts Union in December 2006, once controlled roughly 80 percent of the country; nearly two decades, an African Union peacekeeping mission, and a 2022-2023 government offensive later, it still contests territory with Somalia's federal government while US and Turkish airstrikes continue on both sides of 2026.
