Every heavy platform in those six categories that discloses a production figure, 259 systems across 1,077 in the database, sums to 228,304 units. That is not a rounding gap. It is the difference between an object issued to individual soldiers by the tens of millions and objects built in fleets numbering in the hundreds or low thousands.

Even the smallest entry on that chart, the G3’s 8,000,000 units, is larger than every tank category total in the WeaponSpecs database. No fighter jet, helicopter, IFV, warship, or submarine production run comes within an order of magnitude of a mid-tier rifle, let alone the AK-47.
Why doesn’t the AKM’s own number add up?
This is where a database built from many sources has to check itself. The WeaponSpecs entry for the AKM lists 50,000,000 units built. AKM’s own Wikipedia infobox states a “No. built” figure of 10,278,300, roughly 5 times lower. Neither number is obviously wrong, they are almost certainly counting different things: Soviet-only state production versus every licensed and unlicensed foreign-built AKM-pattern rifle across the dozens of countries that manufactured them. That ambiguity is exactly the failure mode independent researchers who study rifle production have documented.
“AK-type rifles (an estimated 76 million), AR-10 and AR-15 types (est. 13 million), G3 types (est. 8 million), and FAL types (est. 5.5 million)” are the only four self-loading rifle families to exceed 5 million units produced, with “some 175 million self-loading service rifles believed to have been produced to date,” wrote N.R. Jenzen-Jones in a Small Arms Survey working paper (Working Paper 25, January 2017).
Notice that Jenzen-Jones’ entire AK-type family estimate, 76 million, is itself lower than the sum of just the WeaponSpecs database’s AK-47 (75M) and AKM (50M) entries, 125 million. That is not a contradiction to paper over, it is the same lesson twice: production totals for widely-copied small arms don’t cleanly add up across sources, and any single figure, including ours, should be read as an estimate rather than an audited count.
So we ran the comparison again without the disputed number. Strip the AKM’s 50,000,000 out of the database’s combined rifle-and-pistol total of 258,001,000 (rifle type: 207,701,000; pistol type: 50,300,000) and the remainder is 208,001,000 units. Divide that by the 228,304-unit combined heavy-platform total and the ratio barely moves: small arms still outbuild every tank, jet, helicopter, IFV, warship, and submarine combined by roughly 911 times. Throwing out the shakiest number in the dataset does not change the conclusion, it just makes the conclusion more defensible.

The two IFVs at the top of this chart, 20,000 units each, are the single largest heavy-platform production runs in the WeaponSpecs database. The AK-47 alone outbuilds all eight systems here combined by more than 500 times.
Add up every disclosed tank, fighter, helicopter, IFV, warship, and submarine in the database, 259 systems total, and the combined figure is 228,304 units: 57,113 tanks (36 systems), 31,035 fighters (51 systems), 30,499 helicopters (38 systems), 108,852 IFVs (43 systems), 397 warships (61 systems), and 408 submarines (30 systems). That last pair of numbers looks like a disclosure failure until you consider what a warship or submarine actually is: a class of major surface combatants or submarines is often only ever built in the dozens, by design, because each hull costs enough and takes long enough to build that a “production run” of even 50 units is unusually large for the category. Low totals there reflect reality, not a gap in reporting.
