How the map ring is scaled

Each placement draws a real circle on the map, radius equal to the system's published range in kilometres, converted to metres at true map scale. Zoom or pan the map and the ring stays geographically accurate, it is not resized to fit the view. Drag a marker anywhere and its ring follows in real time at the same radius, so you can place a system over any point of interest and see how far its published reach extends from there.

Why some rings look like an oval instead of a circle: the underlying map is a flat Mercator projection, but the ring still represents a true constant ground distance in every direction. For a short-range system near the equator that difference is invisible, but for an intercontinental range like a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or any system placed at a high latitude, flattening that real curved-earth distance onto a 2D map visibly stretches the ring. It is a property of map projection, not an error in the range figure.

What can be placed, and what cannot

Air defense

Draws the published engagement range, the maximum distance at which the system can intercept a target.

Artillery and rocket launchers

Draws the published max firing range, the gun or rocket's own reach, not the vehicle's travel range.

Missiles, aircraft, other ground systems

Missiles, fighters, bombers, UAVs, helicopters, transports and trainers all draw their published platform range figure.

Tanks and IFVs

Not selectable. Their published range is the vehicle's road/travel range, not a weapon reach, and no main-gun range figure is tracked in this database.

Warships and submarines

Not selectable. This database does not carry a comparable published range field for naval platforms.

Rifles and pistols

Not selectable. Their published effective range is measured in metres, a different unit and a different kind of figure than the kilometre-scale ranges drawn here.

A system missing a published range for its type simply cannot be added, it is greyed out with a "No published range" note in the search results rather than silently defaulting to zero. Up to 8 systems can be placed on the map at once.

Is this an operational threat envelope, no-escape zone or targeting tool? +

No. The Range Map is an educational, illustrative tool that draws a published maximum or engagement range as a geographically-scaled ring from a point you choose on a real map. A real map can look more operational than an abstract diagram, so it is worth repeating plainly, this does not model intercept geometry, closure rates, terrain, radar horizon, line of sight, countermeasures, doctrine or any other factor that would define an actual operational threat envelope, no-escape zone or targeting solution. It is a reach comparison, not a military planning tool.

Which range figure is drawn for each system type? +

The field read is disjoint by system type. Air-defense systems draw their published engagement range, the maximum distance at which the system can intercept a target. Artillery and rocket launchers draw their published max firing range, the reach of the gun or rocket itself. Every other plottable type (missiles, fighters, bombers, UAVs, helicopters, transports, trainers) draws its published range, typically a ferry, operational or maximum range figure. These are different kinds of figures and are never blended into one number.

Why can I not place tanks, IFVs, warships, submarines, rifles or pistols? +

Tanks and IFVs are direct-fire platforms whose main-gun reach is not published as a distance figure in this database, only their road/travel range is, which is not a weapon range and would be misleading drawn as one. Warships and submarines do not publish a comparable range field either. Rifles and pistols publish an effective range in metres, a different unit measuring a different kind of engagement distance than the kilometre-scale ranges drawn here. Mixing metre-scale small-arms figures, or a vehicle travel range, into a kilometre-scale weapon-reach map ring would be misleading, so these system types are excluded from selection entirely.

Yes. Drag the marker anywhere on the map and its ring follows live at the same real-world radius. You can also click any point on the map while a placement is selected to move it there, and remove a placement from its popup or from the side panel legend.
