Russian Kh-101 Crashes Into Poland as NK Missile Kills Family
A Russian cruise missile flew 100km into NATO territory overnight as Moscow used a North Korean missile against Ukraine for the first time in a year.

Russia fired roughly 61 Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukraine overnight into July 30 as part of a mixed missile and drone barrage, one of which overshot its target and crashed about 100 kilometers inside Poland, a NATO member, while a separate strike using what Ukrainian officials say was preliminarily identified as a North Korean ballistic missile killed five members of one family in the village of Radushne near Kryvyi Rih.
A cruise missile crosses into NATO airspace
Polish radars tracked at least a dozen missiles passing near western Ukraine around 3:30 a.m. local time, with roughly 20 objects observed close to Polish airspace during the barrage. One of them, assessed as a Russian Kh-101 (NATO reporting name AS-23A Kodiak) launched from a Tu-95MS or Tu-160 strategic bomber, overshot Ukrainian territory and crashed approximately 100 kilometers inside Poland near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship, leaving a crater roughly 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep. No one was hurt. Poland scrambled two F-16 fighters along with a NATO A330 refueling tanker, a Polish Saab 340 airborne early-warning aircraft and a Mi-24 helicopter, which located the crash site.

Polish officials said their forces were prepared to shoot the missile down had it continued deeper into the country. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the incident a violation of NATO airspace, and NATO spokesman Col. European Council President António Costa described the incident as part of what he called “Russia’s aggression,” calling it a threat to European security as a whole. Army Recognition’s reporting on this strike puts the missile at 7.45 meters long with a launch mass of 2,300 to 2,400 kilograms, powered by a TRDD-50A turbofan engine that gives it a cruise speed around Mach 0.58 and a maximum near Mach 0.78. Independent assessments credit it with a range of roughly 2,500 to 2,800 kilometers and a warhead of about 450 kilograms of conventional high explosive, with variants built for penetration or submunition dispersal, guided by a combination of inertial navigation, GLONASS satellite positioning, terrain-contour matching and electro-optical terminal guidance that gives it an estimated circular error of just 10 to 20 meters. Russia’s own publicized figure claims a range up to 4,500 kilometers, a Russian state claim that is not independently verified and sits well above what outside analysts credit the missile with.
Independent assessments put the Kh-101's range roughly 1,700 to 2,000 kilometers short of Russia's own publicized figure, the kind of gap between claim and credited capability that shows up often in Russian weapons disclosures.
A North Korean missile, preliminarily, kills a family
Separately in the same overnight barrage, a strike on the village of Radushne near Kryvyi Rih killed five members of one family, two parents and three children, with the fate of four additional children and a 1.5-year-old grandson unclear at time of reporting. At least nine people died across Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said preliminary evidence points to a North Korean short-range ballistic missile as the weapon that hit Radushne.

Russia began firing North Korean-supplied missiles at Ukraine in late 2023, but the last confirmed use before this strike was in August 2025, meaning a nearly year-long gap. Reuters sourcing on the strike indicates North Korean-supplied missiles typically carry a larger warhead and longer range than Russia’s own Iskander (9M723) but are less accurate, and their reappearance points to a fresh North Korean resupply as Russia intensifies its missile campaign.
