China Fields Hypersonic Missile on Its Most Common Destroyer
China's YJ-20 hypersonic missile, previously tied only to its Type 055 flagships, just launched from a Type 052D, a class with 35 hulls in service.

Footage aired by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on July 30 showed, for the first time, a YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile launching from a Type 052D-class destroyer, a ship class nearly four times as numerous as the Type 055 “super destroyer” that had previously been the missile’s only publicly confirmed platform.
A capability jump with no new hardware
Until this test, the YJ-20 had been publicly associated only with China’s Type 055 class, a roughly 13,000-ton “super destroyer” that carries a 112-cell vertical launch system and represents the PLA Navy’s premier surface combatant. The July 30 footage instead showed the missile launched from a Type 052D, a considerably smaller and older destroyer design, using the ship’s existing cold-launch vertical launch system, in which the missile is ejected from its cell by gas pressure before its rocket motor ignites in the air. Trade press reporting on the footage noted no visible external modification to the ship, meaning the same VLS cells that already carry the Type 052D’s HHQ-9 air-defense missiles and YJ-18 anti-ship missiles can apparently also carry the YJ-20.
Why the hull count matters more than the launch itself
The Type 052D is the PLA Navy’s most numerous modern surface combatant, a multirole guided-missile destroyer fitted with a 64-cell vertical launch system and Type 346A active electronically scanned array radar, serving as the fleet’s primary escort and area-air-defense workhorse ahead of the larger Type 055. China has roughly 35 Type 052D destroyers in service, according to Army Recognition and The War Zone, compared with about 10 Type 055s. That means confirmed YJ-20 compatibility with the smaller, far more common ship potentially multiplies by more than three the number of hulls able to hold a carrier group or other high-value target at long range, without any new shipbuilding program, just software and logistics integration to distribute the missile across the existing fleet.
China's roughly 35 Type 052D destroyers outnumber its approximately 10 Type 055 "super destroyers" by more than three to one, so confirmed YJ-20 compatibility with the smaller ship's existing launch system meaningfully widens the pool of hulls able to carry a long-range hypersonic anti-ship missile.
“The footage verifies integration aboard at least one Type 052D, but it strongly indicates that the PLAN intends to distribute long-range hypersonic anti-ship firepower across a much broader portion of its surface fleet,” said Teoman S. Nicanci, defense analyst at Army Recognition Group (Army Recognition, July 30, 2026).
What the YJ-20 reportedly is, and isn’t confirmed to be
China has not published official performance figures for the YJ-20, and no source used here treats Chinese state media’s framing of the test’s success as anything more than a claim. Independent open-source estimates cited by The War Zone put the missile’s cruise speed at Mach 6-plus, potentially approaching Mach 9 in its terminal phase, with an estimated range of 1,000 to 1,500 km, likely as an aero-ballistic or boost-glide vehicle rather than a purely ballistic one. Guidance is assessed to combine satellite navigation, mid-course updates and an active radar or infrared terminal seeker, aimed at high-value targets including aircraft carriers and cruisers. Hypersonic anti-ship weapons are one of the few categories where China is broadly assessed to be ahead of or on par with the United States in fielded systems, which is part of why distributing this particular missile across a much larger share of the surface fleet is significant beyond the single test itself. Global Times’ own coverage of the footage should be read as Chinese state media framing, not an independent assessment of the test’s success or the missile’s performance; any claim beyond the bare fact that CCTV aired the footage is treated here as an unverified state claim.
