Magura V5

A Ukrainian unmanned surface vessel developed and operated by Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR), the first uncrewed naval drone to sink a warship in combat. It carries an explosive payload of up to 320 kg over a stated range of roughly 800 km, and has also been fielded with a modified R-73 air-to-air missile (Sea Dragon) for anti-air use.

Overview

Magura V5 (Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus, V-type) is an unmanned surface vessel developed by Ukraine's Defence Intelligence (HUR) and first shown publicly at the IDEF defense exhibition in Istanbul in July 2023. Built around a 5.5-meter, 1.5-meter-beam hull, it carries an explosive payload reported at up to 320 kg (earlier reporting cited a standard 200-250 kg charge), reaches a top speed of about 78 km/h (42 knots) and a stated operational range of roughly 800 km, and navigates using a combination of GNSS, inertial and visual systems that support both autonomous transit and manual remote control. Magura V5 became the first uncrewed naval drone in history credited with sinking a crewed warship in combat, and HUR has said the type damaged or destroyed at least 18 Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels within its first 18 months of use, contributing to Russia's effective withdrawal of major surface combatants from the western Black Sea. Beyond kamikaze strikes, some Magura V5 units have been configured to carry a modified R-73 air-to-air missile, referred to as "Sea Dragon," allowing the naval drone to engage low-flying aircraft and helicopters, a role later expanded on the larger Magura V7. Ukraine's Defence Intelligence developed the platform in cooperation with Ukraine's 385th Unmanned Surface Vehicles Brigade, which operates it in the Black Sea alongside the SBU's separate Sea Baby program.
