EW Electronic Warfare

Military action that uses the electromagnetic spectrum to sense, deceive, or disable an adversary's radar, radios, and guided weapons, often without firing a shot at all.

EW is the military use of the electromagnetic spectrum itself as a weapon and a shield, jamming a radar instead of shooting down the aircraft it is tracking, or spoofing a GPS signal instead of destroying the missile that depends on it.1 It exists because almost every modern sensor, radio, and guided weapon depends on radiated or received energy somewhere in the spectrum, and controlling that spectrum, denying it to an enemy while protecting your own use of it, can decide a fight before a single kinetic round is fired.

US joint doctrine splits EW into three functions2: electronic attack (EA), using energy to degrade, deny, or destroy an enemy’s use of the spectrum through jamming, spoofing, or directed energy; electronic protection (EP), hardening your own systems against exactly that kind of attack through frequency hopping, shielding, and filtering; and electronic support (ES), passively listening to the spectrum to detect, identify, and locate emitters for targeting or situational awareness. A single vehicle can run more than one of these at once: a system with a signals-intelligence receiver and a jammer on the same chassis, the kind of setup found on systems like Russia’s Murmansk-BN or Ukraine’s Bukovel-AD, is doing ES and EA out of the same box.

EW is frequently confused with cyber warfare, and the two increasingly overlap in practice, but they are not the same discipline. Cyber warfare attacks data and the networks that carry it; EW attacks the physical carrier itself, the radar pulse or the radio signal, regardless of what data rides on it. A cyberattack generally needs a network connection; a jammer needs only enough power and a clear path to overwhelm a receiver from kilometers away. That distinction is a large part of why the counter-drone and GPS-denial fight over Ukraine since 2022 has been fought overwhelmingly with EW rather than malware: small first-person-view drones and precision munitions depend on radio links and satellite navigation that a jammer can disrupt without touching a single computer.

For a buyer or analyst, the numbers that actually matter on an EW system are frequency-band coverage, effective jamming power and range, and whether the system is a standoff pod, an escort jammer flying inside the strike package, or a self-protection suite built into the platform itself.
