Overview

Freya is a pan-European ballistic-missile-defense concept unveiled by the Ukrainian company Fire Point in May 2026, intended to counter threats such as Russia's Iskander-M at a fraction of the cost of existing Western interceptor systems. Rather than a standalone national air-defense system, it is designed as an open-architecture network built around a new composite-airframe interceptor missile, designated FP-7.x, roughly 7.25 meters long with a 1.15-meter outer diameter and a stated speed of 1,500-2,000 meters per second. The interceptor uses a semi-active image infrared (IIR) seeker being developed in partnership with Germany's Diehl Defence, drawing on that company's IRIS missile family. Rather than requiring a dedicated proprietary radar network, Freya is designed to integrate with existing NATO-standard European long-range detection radars, among them Sweden's SAAB Giraffe 8A/4A, France's Thales Ground Master 400 and Germany's Hensoldt TRML-4D, tied together via the NATO-standard Link 16 protocol and the ASTERIX protocol for radar data exchange. Fire Point has said the first ballistic-missile interception is planned for the end of 2027, and in July 2026 a nine-country Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition committed to helping expedite development. As of mid-2026 Freya remains an announced concept and development program: it has not conducted a publicly confirmed intercept test, is not in production, and figures such as its roughly USD 700,000 target cost per shot are program goals rather than confirmed unit prices.
