Overview

First demonstrated in 2015, Blackwing is a compact tube-launched unmanned aircraft built on the Switchblade 300 airframe but carrying an EO/IR sensor payload in place of a warhead. It can be launched from a submerged submarine via an underwater-to-air delivery canister, from a surface ship or ground vehicle via tube, or from a Multipack Launcher compatible with existing tactical missile systems. Its low visual, thermal and acoustic signature makes it hard to detect, and its secure Digital Data Link lets it relay tactical data between undersea and surface assets as well as stream real-time EO/IR video, giving a submerged submarine a look above the waterline without surfacing. This record is deliberately sparse on performance. AeroVironment publishes no speed, range, endurance or ceiling figures for Blackwing on either its product page or its official datasheet, and the Switchblade 300 and 600 figures that appear in the Wikipedia infobox describe those munitions rather than Blackwing, so they have not been carried across. Only the physical dimensions, which come from AeroVironment's own datasheet, are recorded as data. Blackwing is unarmed and carries no warhead.
