Australia, Japan Test First Jointly Built Laser Weapon

Project Boobook's field trials, plus a new decade-long deal letting Japan test hypersonic missiles on Australian ranges, mark a fast-deepening alliance.

Australia and Japan have completed field trials of “Boobook,” the first defense system the two countries have ever co-developed, a high-energy laser built by Australia’s government laser lab alongside Mitsubishi Electric, with a new Australian manufacturing plant and a decade-long deal to let Japan test hypersonic missiles on Australian ranges announced the same day.

What actually happened

Field trials for Project Boobook were completed at the Cultana Training Area and at the Defence Science and Technology Group’s Edinburgh site, both in South Australia, according to Breaking Defense and corroborated by Australian Defence Magazine. The system takes its name from the Australian boobook owl, and it was built jointly by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group, which has more than two decades of directed-energy research behind it, and Mitsubishi Electric Australia together with its Japanese parent company, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Multiple outlets, including Mirage News and The Japan Times, independently describe this as the first co-development project between Australian and Japanese defense industry, distinct from Australia’s separate purchase of Mogami-class stealth frigates from Japan in a roughly 10 billion Australian dollar deal the prior year.

Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy framed the project as more than a technology demonstration.

“Boobook is more than a technology project. It is a practical example of the growing defence industrial partnership between Australia and Japan,” said Pat Conroy, Australian Minister for Defence Industry (Australian Defence Magazine, Aug. 18, 2026).

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles described the laser’s intended role in concrete terms, saying it is “enhanced laser capability that can be put on land combat platforms as well as littoral platforms,” meaning it is designed to work equally on vehicles and ships rather than being purpose-built for a single service.

A laser that watches, not one that shoots, at least for now

It matters that Boobook’s demonstrated role so far is surveillance and threat detection rather than a kinetic intercept capability. Directed-energy weapons have been pursued by several militaries for years as a cheaper-per-shot alternative to missile interceptors against drones and rockets, but fielding a laser powerful and stable enough to reliably destroy a target in flight is a much harder engineering problem than building one that can detect, track, and characterize a threat at range. Marles’ own description of Boobook’s use case, land and littoral platforms performing detection rather than kinetic defeat, suggests the program is still at the stage where the sensor and tracking side of the system, not the destructive power of the beam, is the part that has been proven out in these trials.

That distinction does not make the announcement smaller. A working detection-and-tracking laser is a real prerequisite for any future kinetic version, and the money behind Boobook signals both governments expect it to mature. Mitsubishi Electric Australia is investing 70 million Australian dollars in a new manufacturing facility at Rydalmere, in New South Wales, a commitment that only makes sense if both companies expect the program to move from prototype trials toward a production system, not remain a one-off demonstration.

The hypersonic-testing deal announced the same day

Alongside the laser results, Australia and Japan announced a separate, decade-long arrangement allowing Japan’s Self-Defense Forces to test hypersonic and other standoff missiles on Australian ranges. Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called the prospect significant: “If the Japan Self-Defense Forces are able to conduct test launches of standoff missiles, such as hypersonic missiles, in Australia, it would be a groundbreaking development,” he said, according to The Japan Times. The arrangement matters because Japan’s own territory offers limited space and airspace for testing long-range weapons without the missile’s flight path crossing populated areas or other countries’ claimed waters, a constraint Australia’s much larger and more sparsely populated test ranges do not share. Marles put the underlying logic plainly, saying Australia can “provide strategic depth to Japan across a range of areas,” with test-range access being one of them, per Taipei Times, which carried the Agence France-Presse wire account of the missile-testing deal.

Read together, the laser trial and the range-access deal describe the same underlying shift: Australia and Japan moving from cooperation on paper toward shared industrial output and shared physical infrastructure, at a pace neither country has matched with the other before. Both developments land in the same week Washington ordered a scale-back of U.S. participation in South Korea’s Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, a reduction this desk covered separately, a juxtaposition worth noting rather than overstating: as one U.S. ally-facing commitment visibly contracts, two other regional allies are visibly expanding what they build and test together.

Boobook does not currently appear in WeaponSpecs’ systems database; it is a newly disclosed program without the kind of public spec sheet that would support a database entry yet, and this piece does not force a comparison to an unrelated laser system to fill that gap.
