IFF Identification Friend or Foe

A transponder-based system that lets radar and air-defense operators ask an aircraft or vehicle whether it is friendly before deciding to engage it.

IFF, short for Identification Friend or Foe, is the transponder system that lets a radar or fire-control operator ask an approaching aircraft, ship, or vehicle a simple question before anyone decides to engage it: are you one of ours. Radar alone cannot answer that. A blip on a scope carries speed, altitude, and heading, but nothing about allegiance, so without a positive identification an air-defense crew is left making a judgment call under time pressure, and in a fast-moving engagement a wrong guess kills the wrong people. IFF was first fielded in the 1940s to cut down on exactly that kind of friendly-fire incident1, once radar made it possible to detect aircraft long before anyone could visually confirm who was flying them.

The mechanism is a matched pair of devices. An interrogator sends a coded radio pulse at an unknown contact, and a transponder aboard that aircraft, if it carries a friendly one and recognizes the challenge, automatically replies with an identifying code. No reply, a wrong reply, or a jammed signal all read as “not confirmed friendly,” which is a very different thing from “confirmed hostile,” and that ambiguity is where most of the real operational risk lives. The standard has moved through several generations since the original World War II sets, most NATO members ran the unencrypted Mode 4 for decades before the alliance mandated the encrypted Mode 5 under STANAG 4193, a shift driven largely by the fact that an unencrypted friendly code can eventually be captured or spoofed by an adversary2. Even with modern encrypted IFF, coalition operations still depend on every partner nation’s equipment being compatible and correctly loaded with current codes, a coordination problem that has contributed to real fratricide incidents even in recent decades.
