Bureviy

A Ukrainian-modernized 220mm multiple launch rocket system built on a Tatra 8x8 chassis, replacing the Soviet-era BM-27 Uragan launch vehicle while firing the same family of 220mm rockets. First shown publicly in 2020 and fielded against Russian forces since 2022, it extends effective range to about 65 km with newer Ukrainian-developed rockets.

Overview

The Bureviy (Ukrainian for "Storm") is a Ukrainian-modernized 220mm multiple launch rocket system developed to replace the aging Soviet-era BM-27 Uragan launch vehicle while remaining compatible with the same family of 220mm artillery rockets. Rather than a new rocket design, Bureviy's main innovation is mounting a 16-round launcher pod and a new digital fire-control system, including a battlefield information-exchange link, on a Tatra T815-7T3RC1 heavy 8x8 wheeled chassis fitted with an armored four-door cabin, in place of the Uragan's tracked BAZ-135MB carrier. The standard 220mm rocket used by both systems is about 4.8 meters long and weighs roughly 280 kg, with a warhead of 90 to 100 kg depending on type; a full 16-rocket salvo can be fired in roughly 20 seconds. While the legacy BM-27 Uragan rocket family is rated to a range of 35 to 40 km, Ukraine has since developed extended-range 220mm rockets for the Bureviy platform stated to reach out to about 65 km. First publicly revealed in 2020, Bureviy has been deployed against Russian forces since the early stages of the full-scale invasion, including in the Kharkiv region, and is produced under Ukraine's state defense-industrial umbrella. Its wheeled Tatra chassis gives it substantially better road mobility and shoot-and-scoot survivability than the tracked Uragan it replaces.
