Overview
The M917A4 is the armored variant of Mack Defense's M917-series Heavy Dump Truck, built on the same 8x8 Mack Granite-derived chassis, Mack MP8 440-horsepower diesel powertrain and Allison 4500 automatic transmission as the standard M917A3. It substitutes a scalable-protection armored cab for the standard cab, which adds roughly 8,000 lb of armor weight versus about 2,000 lb on the unarmored version, reducing rated payload to approximately 45,000 lb (about 20.4 metric tons) at the same 94,500 lb gross vehicle weight. The armored cab is intended to give engineering and logistics crews ballistic and fragmentation protection while performing earthmoving and dump-truck missions in higher-threat operating areas, extending the M917 family's utility beyond the rear-area roles typical of unarmored construction-pattern trucks.
