Leidos' Flight-Proven IR Sensors Head to 18 Golden Dome Satellites

Sierra Space announced Aug. 3 that it selected Leidos to build the infrared sensing payloads for 18 missile-tracking satellites the company is under contract to deliver to the Space Development Agency, filling in the sub-tier supplier detail on a $798 million award that WeaponSpecs covered when it was first announced in July. The sensors trace their design lineage to four predecessor payloads that have been operating in orbit since 2023, meaning this is a scale-up of hardware with real flight history, not a from-scratch design riding on a deadline.

What actually changed this week

The headline dollar figures here are not new. On July 13 and 14, the Space Development Agency awarded Sierra Space $798 million and L3Harris $955 million, 18 satellites apiece, under the Advanced Missile Detection and Tracking Tranche 3 program, part of the Tracking Layer supporting the Golden Dome for America missile-defense architecture. What’s new as of Aug. 3 is the sub-tier disclosure: Sierra Space chose Leidos, not an in-house team or an alternate supplier, to build the actual infrared detection payload for its half of the 36-satellite order. That is the kind of detail that rarely makes headlines on its own, but it answers the question anyone reading the July award would have asked next: who is actually building the sensor that does the tracking.

Leidos’ payload performs onboard digital signal processing, meaning it turns raw infrared detections into usable tracking data aboard the satellite itself rather than downlinking unprocessed data for ground stations to crunch. That distinction matters for a missile-tracking mission where every second of latency between detection and a usable track shrinks the window available to cue an interceptor.

These four figures come from the same broad week of space-sensing procurement but are not directly comparable programs: AMDT3 tracks ballistic and hypersonic missiles for homeland defense, while SB-AMTI tracks aircraft and cruise missiles for battlespace awareness. Together they total roughly $2.37 billion in disclosed and total-order space-sensing spending across two programs in a single week, a small slice of the roughly $19 billion in Golden Dome-adjacent awards trade press has tracked since early August.

Heritage over novelty

“AMDT3 will build upon proven technologies to accelerate global missile defense capability,” said Cindy Gruensfelder, president of Leidos Defense, in the company’s Aug. 3, 2026 announcement (PR Newswire, Aug. 3, 2026).

That line is the actual news value here. Leidos says its infrared payload heritage now spans four Tranche 0 satellites flying since 2023, 14 Tranche 1 sensors and 16 Tranche 2 sensors already delivered, before this AMDT3 award adds up to 18 more. For a missile-defense sensor layer that has to be ready to launch by the end of 2028, choosing a supplier with three tranches of prior delivery and real on-orbit performance data is a materially lower-risk bet than commissioning a new sensor design under the same deadline. It is a useful contrast to Story 1’s Rocket Lab arrangement in the parallel SB-AMTI program, where a satellite constellation is riding on a rocket that has never flown: this week’s two biggest space-sensing awards sit at opposite ends of the risk spectrum, one betting on unproven hardware to gain vendor diversity, the other betting on proven hardware to hit a fixed deadline.

Why the tracking layer matters right now

Golden Dome is the Trump administration’s layered homeland missile-defense initiative, and the sensing and tracking layer, detecting and following hypersonic and ballistic threats from low Earth orbit, is one of its most active procurement lines in 2026. It sits alongside a separate space-based interceptor effort, which down-selected 12 companies in April, and now this sensor sub-tier disclosure. Trade press tracking Golden Dome-adjacent contract awards put the total across satellite orders, launch capacity and tracking constellations at roughly $19 billion in early August 2026 alone. This Leidos deal and Story 1’s Rocket Lab SB-AMTI award are two individually verifiable pieces of that broader spending wave, not the whole of it, and neither is the interceptor layer that would actually have to shoot something down using the track data these satellites generate.

It’s also worth keeping this deal separate from an unrelated Aug. 4 story: the Pentagon’s roughly $3 billion in framework agreements with Northrop Grumman and L3Harris for THAAD and PAC-3 components. That deal covers ground-based interceptor hardware. This one covers space-based infrared tracking satellites under a wholly separate SDA program. L3Harris appears in both only incidentally, as a contractor active across multiple missile-defense layers, not because the two stories are connected.
