Overview

The Textron Ripsaw M5 is the larger, medium-weight member of Textron Systems' tracked, diesel hybrid-electric Ripsaw family of unmanned ground vehicles, with a 1.52 m deck height. Textron's own published combat weight figure is 9,525 kg; this is used here in preference to a figure of roughly 3,855 kg published by Army-Technology.com, which is off by close to a factor of five from Textron's own datasheet and is very likely erroneous. Four Ripsaw M5 vehicles were delivered to the US Army's Robotic Combat Vehicle-Medium (RCV-M) program in June 2021 for evaluation; the RCV-M competition was subsequently deferred in 2022 rather than moving directly to a production decision. Demonstrated turret payload options include the Kongsberg MCT-30 (30/40mm Bushmaster cannon with a 7.62mm coaxial gun) and the Kongsberg CROWS-J remote weapon station, which can carry Javelin, M2, M240 or Mk 19 armament.

Performance

Speed, range, altitude and engagement capability.

Performance specifications
Max speed

Maximum level speed. For aircraft this is at optimal altitude; for ground vehicles, top road speed. Higher means faster response and better kinematic performance.

Combat weight

Fully loaded weight. Lighter eases transport and bridging limits; heavier often means more armor.

Crew

Personnel required to operate. Fewer reduces exposure; autoloaders trade a loader for mechanical complexity.

Cargo payload

Maximum cargo the transport can carry. Higher means more lift per sortie. On an unmanned ground vehicle, this is the maximum mission payload the platform carries, including a weapon station.

Autonomy & control

How the platform moves, how much it does without an operator, and how far the control link reaches.

Autonomy & control specifications
Locomotion

How the platform moves: tracked, wheeled or legged. Tracks suit soft ground and heavy payloads, wheels favor road speed and range, legs handle stairs and rubble. Not a ranking, a trade-off.

Tracked
Autonomy level

How much the platform does without an operator, as the manufacturer describes it. Vendors do not use a common standard, so this is a coarse editorial bucket, not a certified rating.

Semi-autonomous

Specifications compiled from public Textron Systems and reference sources ↗. Published defense figures are approximations, treat comparisons as directional. Last verified 2026-08-18.
